songwriting is no kareoke….and vice versa

I can’t sleep. Not that this is an unusual occurrence. But I can’t sleep. I find often when I am in this state songwriting does me no good at all. And I often stay awake longer than necessary to wonder why not being able to sleep meanders so many people into song.

Tonight I sang karaoke, sang is a halfhearted word, because I did know all the words, but singing to me involves the heart. However, when I do karaoke the crowd goes wild. The songs I sing are just what they wanted and they love it.

My question always remains, how do I make people sing my songs like they sing those songs?

How? Hard work and catchy tunes, people say. But that’s not always it, it takes more than a pretty melody. It takes more than a whole-hearted performance. It takes more than a pretty chorus.

So, I keep writing. In search not of the perfect karaoke tune (because that would be so lame), but in search of a song that makes people want to sing.
