go folk your heart out

meaningless effort, meaningful songs…

After writing about sad songs I picked up my guitar and played a riff that I’ve been running through my practices for years now. And I wrote a song to it. I set lyrics to its rhythm and flow and it sounds quite nice, if you ask me. Tonight I went to see Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Ted Leo is an interesting character. He’s been in the industry for years now. His latest Living With the Living is just as good as any other. He is a powerhouse of pop-punk and has been doing it for longer than most. He keeps on writing, he keeps on singing. He keeps on rocking out. And he sets up his own instruments. There’s no sound guy. Ted Leo is a purist, a true person of rock. Though he’s been around as long as anyone can remember, and in ways has played too many of the same things. He still feels it. He still writes songs that sing, that play, that feel.

So writing about sadness made me sit down and write. I wonder what makes Ted Leo scribe his songs. Is it a calling, or perhaps the way his XLR clips in. Perhaps it is the act of doing that makes everything come out like it’s effortlessly done.
